Online Data Collection
What
is Online Data Collection? :
Online
data collection allows companies to gather information about users in order to
understand the reader’s demographics, interests and needs. Online data can be collected through
different methods from online surveys, advertisements, emails, online purchases
or social media.
Benefits
of Online Data Collection:
·
Data Collection utilizes behavioral
targeting to identify what information to display to particular users. It
benefits the readers because it informs them of a new product or a website that
they might be interested in. For
example, have you ever been on your Facebook page and suddenly and ad appears
for “Victoria’s Secret panties”? this ad may be shown to you by an
advertisement company because you fit the “niche” of the product. You are
probably a female between the ages of 18-45, who shops online, has been
browsing for lingerie or a previous customer from Victoriassecret.com . By
seeing ads or receiving emails of products and services that fit our
demographics and likings, we may find a sale or information on a new product
that we are actually interested in.
Privacy
Concerns:
·
One of the biggest concerns online users
may have is that online data collection companies will store and misuse this
information without their permission.
Issues:
·
Data collectors can record your IP
address, where you are seeing the ad from, how many times you have seen the ad,
the version of the ad you need to see. This information will be stored in their
servers and will be used to either send out emails to you, show ads or
customize their website or product to make it more appealing to you. The issue
arises because these websites are not notifying users that they are being
recorded, or they offer a very easy way to opt out.
·
Certain websites add cookies to track if
the “users” that click on the ad actually purchased a product or how many times
they were exposed to this ad before they purchased. This can be seen as a
violation of privacy for users who want to keep their consumer information
private from companies.
·
There is no evidence that proves that
Data Collection companies ever deletes this data or how long is the date stored
in their surveys
